SAB Meeting
November 2, 2010
In attendance:

    •    May need to revisit Teacher reps; Schooler is out on Maternity leave
    •    Comprehensive School Plan and Engagement Plan reviewed at October SAB
    •    Office of Family Engagement offers feedback by Nov 5th; Final due Nov 12th
    •    Zagami (instructional superintendant) gave feedback…reviewed with SAB
    •    Was positive about our plan
    •    Said was one of best received
    •    Enrollment
    •    We are at 245 students as of audit
    •    Received 4 students during week of audit, but loss 2 as well
    •    Subject of enrollment came up at Principal’s Academy
    •    Chancellor said there would be “targeted equalization”
    •    No one-size fits all
    •    Will be looking at district wide needs for each school to determine where staff will be removed
    •    We may lose a teaching position
    •    IF we are forced to sacrifice, in the past requirement was last hired = first fired
    •    If we are in this situation, we will need to come up with a person OR equal dollars in programs
    •    We do not have enough “programs” dollars to sacrifice
    •    Apx amt 81K
    •    Instructional coach, Librarian position are currently unfilled
    •    Instructional Coach could be sacrificed
    •    Library/Media Aide plus other line items to cover
    •    1.5 Position in ELL could be partially combined w/Library/Media Aide position to remove
    •    AC has already submitted request for why these positions are critical @ West in advance of possible decision for us to remove
    •    We are waiting for word for the next week or two
    •    In School Suspension Coordinator
    •    AC has investigated methods of obtaining this position
    •    Due to budget constraints we cannot add at this point
    •    AC has investigated methods of including this role in the Instructional Coach position
    •    We have been granted an assistant for the EC classes a few times a week, but will not be able to work with full school of students
    •    Family Engagement
    •    Looking into survey with The W in December
    •    Parenting Workshops being developed by Ms. Spraggins
    •    Waiting for feedback from Central Office on Family Engagement plan
    •    Tutoring
    •    School-based small groups are being developed for students in need of extra support
    •    BURST is in place for K – 3rd grade
    •    4th – 5th has Kingsbury tutors coming in 3 – 4 times per week to offer extra support (Phonics, Comprehension Strategies, etc)
    •    Did baseline assessment to find students for best fit (i.e. if already getting support via Ms. Schach, not being pulled for this as well)
    •    After school students (3rd – 5th)
    •    Have the academic power hour
    •    YOUR brings in tutors
    •    Needs assessment performed
    •    Play-dough program through 21st Century Grant is providing remediation lessons and assessments
    •    Middle School needs targeting due to lack of enrollment in after school
    •    “Study Island”
    •    Covers Reading, Math & Social Studies
    •    Covers each standard
    •    Eventually covers K thru 8th
    •    Cut Scores can mirror DC CAS cut scores
    •    Students go through lessons and must reach certain level of proficiency before they can move on
    •    Will be received after purchasing freeze is lifted
    •    Purchase Order is ready
    •    Awaiting approval from Central Office
    •    Amount needed is apx $3,600
    •    Ideally need to have it by return from Thanksgiving break
    •    CC offers possibility of working with Churches to raise funds
    •    PSCO could possibly front money
    •    Thirty Minute Morning Block by MP to instruct staff on DonorsChoose.org to solicit donations for specific needs
    •    PSCO Donation Drive for list of needs to neighborhood listservs
    •    FARM Applications
    •    Need to get information on who has and has not turned them in
    •    Is on back burner until final audit is completed next week
    •    Need 30% of our applications still
    •    Main Office staff will be going through enrollment packets to determine exact students who have not submitted
    •    Afterschool Program
    •    MP met w/Spoken Word Artist who would like to become involved
    •    Is there time/capability to incorporate this kind of activity into after school?
    •    Students will sign up for targeted activities
    •    Must be coordinated w/Ms. Cobb
    •    AC will provide list of what is in place for each grade currently
    •    Providers will need to be registered DCPS Volunteers
    •    Fingerprinting/Volunteers
    •    DCPS said we cannot have MPDC take care of the fingerprinting etc.
    •    Will see about feasibility of having a large group go downtown or possibility of them coming to school
    •    Master Educator Reviews
    •    There has been no coordination this year with extenuating circumstances for ME Evaluations
    •    All observations this year are unannounced
    •    MEs take into consideration the situations which are occurring
    •    Evaluations are assessing growth

    •    Next PSCO General Meeting is December 2nd   
    •    Family Math Night
    •    Possible meeting to discuss strategies for keeping families past Pre-K/K
