Frequently asked questions about

Pre-Registration and Enrollment at West

  1. What is Pre-registration vs. enrollment?

Parents can come into the school to complete all required documents before the first day of school to pre-register. However, the child is not actually enrolled until they attend school the first day. Pre-registration is important so that we can anticipate staffing, instructional and academic needs of all incoming students.

  1. How can I pre-register my child for West?

Enclosed, you will find the documents that are required to pre-register your child at West. There are supporting documents that are needed to show proof of DC residency and must be presented at the time of pre-registration. All of this information and attached forms can also be found on-line at: http://www.k12.dc.us/schools/procedures.htm.

  1. When can I pre-register?
    • Families enrolling their child for the first time, who have a child 3, 4 or 5 years old, can begin to pre-register May 1st.
    • Families returning to DCPS whose child is at least 6 years old can begin to pre-register July 15th.
    • Families with returning students to DCPS must pre-register annually.

  1. Why do I pre-register annually?

Every child who resides in Washington, DC and is 5 years old is required by law to attend school. To ensure that the child resides in DC, parents must show proof of DC residency.

  1. Where can I pre-register?

You can pre-register at West Elementary School located at 1338 Farragut Street NW. Ms. Despertt and Mrs. Hill, our administrative assistants in the main office, will be happy to help you. Please contact them if you have any additional questions at 202-576-6226.

  1. How can I register my child at West if I live outside of the school’s boundaries?

If you have missed the out-of –boundary process, you must be recommended for placement by the Principal. The Principal’s recommendation will be based on the following criteria:

·         Successful interview with the parents including the parents’ plan for involvement in the school and the child’s academic achievement.

·         Student’s academic history including test scores, attendance record and behavioral assessments.

·         Student must meet the age requirement and there must be available space in the grade level requested.

*Please note: the cut off birth date is September 30th for all incoming 3, 4 and 5 year olds.
