My name is Kate Outten and I am excited to be a part of West ES as the fourth grade teacher this school year (2011-2012). I have taught fourth and fifth grade prior to coming here in my home country, The Bahamas, and in Prince William County Public Schools consecutively. I obtained a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Elementary Education from The College of the Bahamas and a Master of Arts Degree in Teaching and Learning from Nova Southeastern University in Florida, with focus on teaching elementary math.
I am passionate about teaching in general, but the subject I am most excited about teaching is math. I enjoy spending quality time with my son and daughter, reading any education related material, visiting local museums, jogging, and fishing. I also enjoy reading aloud Wayside Stories and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory to my students. My favorite fictional genres are fantasy and realistic fiction.
I believe that each child is a unique individual who needs a secure, caring, and stimulating atmosphere in which to grow and mature emotionally, intellectually, physically, and socially. It is my desire as an educator to help students meet their fullest potential in these areas by providing an environment that is safe, supports risk-taking, and invites a sharing of ideas.
As a result, it is my hope and dream that this year all students in my fourth grade class at West would become more confident about learning, make significant progress in all areas, and look forward to coming to school every day to achieve their personal best!
