Gwen is an active volunteer in a variety of activities at West EC and the West EC Parent, Staff and Community Organization (“PSCO”). Ms. Washington led the Spanish Club. During Spring of 2011, she gave weekly Spanish tutorials to the Spanish club, which included students in Preschool, Pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten and First Grade as part of the West EC After school Program. Currently, Ms. Washington is actively engaged in bringing the Washington Jazz Arts Institute’s WeeJam Program, for music appreciation, to students in West EC’s Afterschool Program. Ms. Washington served as Chairperson for the West PSCO’s Early Childhood Playdates, organizing playdates for early childhood students during the months of July and August of this year. For the past twelve years, Ms. Washington has served the people of the District of Columbia as a staff attorney at the Public Defender Service. She has served as a trial attorney and as a civil legal services attorney, representing her clients and their families in criminal cases, juvenile delinquency cases and civil cases occurring ancillary to the criminal matters. In addition, Ms. Washington serves the community as an immigrant defense expert, advising attorneys and members of the public as to issues involved in the intersection of immigration law and criminal law. Further, she is an active member of several professional and civic organizations dedicated to pro bono representation for indigent persons. Most importantly, Gwendolyn Washington is most proud of her roles as a wife and mother. She and her husband, Samuel Washington, are the proud parents of two sons, Seth and Samuel. Samuel is a student in Ms. Phillips’ Pre-Kindergarten class and a former student in Ms. Vinson’s Preschool class last year. Seth hopes to attend West EC next year as a Preschool student. |
