West Family Reading Night - Thursday, March 2, 2012

Join the West Family as we celebrate Read Across America Day, a celebration of Dr. Seuss' birthday and literacy.  From 5:30 - 7:00 please come check out our family literacy event which encourages a life long love of reading and supports families to bring books into the home.  We invite our families and the West community to wear pajamas, enjoy a breakfast style dinner sponsored by IHOP and visit with three local authors.  The event is open to the public.

Through the tireless work of a committed group of parents we will be visited by 3 authors who will read their books, share their writing process with families and answer questions about what it takes to become a good writer.  We will also have a Scholastic Book Fair on site.  Click here to learn more.

Each West student will receive a book for home.  Parents who can donate are asked to contribute $10.00.  The PSCO will cover the costs for families who cannot afford a donation.

Schedule:

5:30 - 6:00  Pancake Dinner with support from IHOP - Columbia Heights

6:00 - 7:00 Author Readings

Authors:

Robyn Ringgold - My Mom Hugs Trees

Do you think your Mom does strange things? Well, my Mom hugs trees, rescues bugs, sings with birds, and talks to flowers. Come meet my Mom. You might end up doing strange things too!

Delightful illustrations and poetic text hold the attention of young readers and make My Mom Hugs Trees a perfect "read-to-me" book. The story reflects a love and enjoyment of life. Mom, with her strange habits, will foster children's connection to nature.

Marty Rhodes Figley - Prisoner for Liberty

James Forten knew how important freedom was. He was a free African American born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. When the American Revolution started in 1776, James was too young to help fight for freedom from British rule. But in 1781, at age fifteen, he took a job on the Royal Louis, an American ship. A British warship soon captured the Royal Louis. James was taken prisoner. The British often sold African American prisoners into slavery. What would happen to James? Would he ever see his family again?

Jennifer Allison - Gilda Joyce, Psychic Investigator

Ever since her father died, kooky Gilda Joyce has been working hard to sharpen her psychic skills. She's determined to communicate with spirits from the Other Side and become a crack investigator of spooky, twisted mysteries. After wrangling an invitation to visit San Francisco relatives, Gilda discovers just how much her dreary, tight-lipped uncle and his strange, delicate daughter need her help to uncover the terrible family secret that has a tortured ghost stalking their home.

From poignant to hair-raising and hilarious, this is a behind-the-scenes, tell-all account of the very first case in the illustrious career of Gilda Joyce, Psychic Investigator.
