West is one of the few remaining open-concept schools in the District. The open-space school concept, while popular in the 1960s and 1970s, presents a challenging educational environment for today’s teachers and students. At completion, West will be modernized to reflect 21st Century Learning environment guidelines, as well as, educational and programmatic space needs as specified in DCPS Educational Specifications.
In June 2017, the DC City Council finalized the Capital Improvements Plan (CIP) for fiscal years 2018-2023. As part of this CIP, West was approved for modernization with a budget of $78.5 million. The finalized budget moves the West modernization forward, allowing the project to be completed for school year 2021-2022 — one year earlier than previously planned.
On October 16, 2017, DCPS hosted a Project Kick-Off Community Meeting to explain the process and goals of the project. Families also had the opportunity to provide feedback on the school community, their hopes and fears of the modernization, and what they currently like about our school. See the follow-up report >>
Timeline: A feasibility study was begun in the fall of 2018. Construction will begin in school year 2019-2020, and the new school will be ready for occupancy in August 2021.
