Thank You for Another Wonderful School Year! (June 2017)
It has been a phenomenal year, full of community building, learning, laughter and new memories. We are so deeply appreciative of your partnership with us this year; we could not have made any of this happen without your trust and dedication.
We have a lot to celebrate as we close out the year, and we are working to complete an annual report to share our achievements in relationship to our five-year strategic plan, The West Way. This report will be posted to the school website and sent by email during the summer. Also, be on the lookout for our first summer mailing in early July that will include our before-care application.
If you have any questions over the summer—rest assured—we’re still here. Summer hours for the building are 8 AM to 4 PM. I hope you all have a restful summer. Our building will feel quiet and lonely without our scholars, and we will eagerly anticipate their arrival on August 21.
Welcome Back From Spring Break! (April 2017)
I hope everyone had a restful break and enjoyed the time spent with family. I had the privilege of taking a group of our Eighth Grade scholars to Paris and Barcelona. Having lived abroad and taken numerous groups of students abroad, I know the experience of being immersed in a new culture is something that will affect scholars for the rest of their lives. We enjoyed visiting the Palace of Versailles, the Louvre, the Picasso and Dali museums, and much more. Students enjoyed practicing their Spanish and meeting new friends who also were on tour with us. We look forward to many more excursions for all our scholars.
As we return from break, we enter a busy two months. We are in re-enrollment season, as well as PARCC and end-of-year testing, and lots of student and family activities. Next week is Teacher Appreciation Week, and we hope you will join us in celebrating our phenomenal group of teachers who do so much for our school community.
Thank you again for your partnership and trust. We look forward to a wonderful last two months of the 2016-2017 school year!

Student Satisfaction Results (March 2017)
Last month, we administered an interim Student Satisfaction Survey, and I am pleased to share that our student satisfaction rate is 99 percent. For context, in School Year 2014-2015, our student rating was 78 percent, and last year, it was 84 percent. This is an incredibly meaningful metric to me as your principal. I deeply believe that children should feel safe, be known by their school staff and find joy in coming to school, and our interim results reflect that our scholars feel this way. I am proud of our incredible West team and all the love and energy they invest in their work every day. Thank you for continuing to support and invest in our school community. It truly takes a village!
Getting Back Into the Groove of Things (January 2017)
Happy New Year! I hope the start of your new year has been a wonderful one. We are excited to be back with our scholars and getting back into the groove of things.
I am excited to share that this month I will join a cohort of DCPS and DC Public Charter principals who are beginning an Executive Masters in Leadership program at Georgetown University. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to continue to develop as a leader for our school community and to learn alongside other leaders in our city. The program classes are held twice a month, on Fridays and Saturdays. And, on the Fridays when I am at class, I have complete confidence in our amazing Leadership Team and staff to continue to serve you and our scholars. Should you have any questions, please feel free to reach out.
Thank you for your support as I embark on this professional journey!
Winter Break Progress Report (December 2016)
Thank you for a wonderful start to the school year! We couldn’t have made it happen without your support.
This year, our suspension and behavior referrals are down by almost 50 percent. We’ve met with more than 80 percent of our families during parent-teacher conferences, and more than 75 percent of our families received a home visit. We’re excited for our mid-year testing in January to see how much our kids have grown since the beginning of the year.
Have a restful break and enjoy every moment spent with your loved ones. I am very much looking forward to building on our successes in 2017. I’ll see you in the new year!
Looking Forward, Working Hard (November 2016)
All of us at West hope you enjoyed the Thanksgiving holiday. I know our staff enjoyed spending time visiting family and friends! Now, we are energized to end this semester strongly.
With only five academic weeks before the end of the advisory period, we have a lot of information to cover. So, it is essential that our scholars attend every day of school. We understand that we are entering flu season, and we ask that you encourage your children to wash their hands frequently and thoroughly and to get a full night of rest each night. We also will encourage use of hand sanitizer and promote hand washing at school.
Thank you for helping to keep our scholars healthy and ready to learn every day!
Outlook for the New School Year (August 2016)
It is with great excitement that I welcome you all to the 2016-2017 school year! We have been busy this summer, planning and building systems to make this a wonderful school year. This year, we are excited to roll out “The West Way” — our five-year strategic plan. West is a special school, but we want to see it continue to grow and move from “good” to “great.” To do this, we believe that focusing on three priorities over the course of five years will enable us to elevate the instructional program and scholar experience at West.
Our three strategic priorities are:
Family Engagement—involving our families as academic partners in each child’s education
through various means, including home visits and Academic Parent-Teacher Teams
School-wide Enrichment—SEM for all students, with weekly enrichment based on student interest
Small-group Instruction—tailored to each child’s needs within the classroom and based on multiple sources of data
Additional information about our strategic plan and opportunities for involvement will be featured in future issues of The W. Your feedback and thoughts are important in helping us make this a great school year.
